Lighthouse

LOCATION: North Truro, MA, on the Atlantic Ocean.

HISTORY: First erected in 1797 as a 30' brick tower, 500' from the edge of the cliff. A new Highland Light was erected in 1857, equipped with a first order fresnel lens. In 1901, an even larger first order lens replaced the original. When electricity came to Highland Light in 1932, it became the most powerful lighthouse on the East Coast, visible for over 45 nautical miles. In the early 1950's, the fresnel lens was replaced with aerobeacons. Automation came in 1986. In June 1996, Highland Light was moved back 450' from the edge of the cliff, next to the 7th fairway of the Highland Golf Links. It was relit on November 7, 1996.

DIRECTIONS: Heading towards Provincetown on Rt. 6, look for large green highway sign that says "Cape Cod Light, Highland Road." Exit here and bear right onto Highland Road. At the end of the road, turn right onto S. Highland Rd, then a left onto Lighthouse Rd. Park in designated parking areas.

OTHER INFO: More commonly known as Cape Cod Light. It has a white light (aerobeacon), flashing every 5 seconds. It is located 183' above the water and can be seen for 23 nautical miles.

PHOTO TIPS: Front side of lighthouse (pictured above) best photographed in the afternoon, rear side during the morning.
